Allotments St. Stephen Parish Council operates three allotment sites at Tippendell Lane, Park Street Lane and Watford Road. Allotments are an important community resource, used by local residents year round to grow a wide variety of produce, soft fruits, and flowers.

Allotments Location Plan

Allotment gardening is enjoying a boom at the moment with the price of shop bought goods at their highest ever. People are aware that the ever increasing use of chemicals used in mass produced food, can have an adverse effect on our health. Whereas growing your own produce on an allotment, you usually know exactly what has gone into the food that you produce. However, the responsibility of taking on an allotment should not be underestimated. Cultivating and maintaining an allotment takes time, commitment, enthusiasm and a considerable amount of energy to start up and keep it going. The ever present battle with weeds can make it a frustrating pastime but if dealt with regularly weeds can be kept under control.

There is always friendly advice available to our allotment holders, fellow holders will be able to tell you the best way to grow prize winning produce and five minutes later someone else will tell you how wrong that advice was and how you should really do it. But perhaps the best way to get advice, other than listening to Gardeners Question Time or joining the Royal Horticultural Society is to join The St Stephens Gardening Club and for as little as £3 per year you can get good advice, buy seeds, plants, fertilizer etc., at much reduced prices.

The Parish Council holds an Annual Allotment competition and annual prize giving.

Hiring an allotment: The size of an allotment is measured in “poles”. A full plot is 5 poles, which is roughly 6m x 17m and a half plot 2.5 poles. To hire an allotment please contact Carol Hardy at the Parish Office.
